Welcome

Hi there, and welcome to my website. I’m J. David Dutch, a child of the 1980s who grew up immersed in rock music, social gatherings, and endless bicycle adventures. Like many, adulthood gradually pulled me away from the carefree rhythms of youth, but the memories remain clear.

As I reflect on those times and compare them to the experiences of today’s youth, the contrast is striking. Coming of age before the internet and mobile phones meant life was more spontaneous. We gathered in person, spread news by word of mouth, and lived without the constant surveillance of cameras and smartphones. Mischief was common, and freedom felt boundless.

Writing to Seek Insights

During the COVID lockdowns, I finally had time to pause and reflect. I began writing personal stories, an attempt to capture my youth and understand the forces that shaped me, both within my family and society at large. What started as a therapeutic exercise turned into something deeply enlightening (and far cheaper than a psychologist!). As I wrote, I uncovered countless distinctions between eras. These differences aren’t just about time they’re also shaped by place. Documenting them felt important.

My Book: Bond of the Brotherhood

After years of writing, I realized I had enough material, and a compelling narrative, to publish a book. In 2025, I released Bond of the Brotherhood, now available in paperback and eBook formats on Amazon. The book paints a vivid picture of the environment I grew up in, shares unforgettable stories from my youth, and explores the challenges I overcame. It’s a tribute to a time that shaped me and a reflection on how much the world has changed.

Beyond the Book

I originally created this site to promote my book, but it’s grown into something more, a space to share additional stories, thoughts, and reflections from over the years. I hope you’ll find something here that resonates with you.

Thanks for stopping by. Come back soon!
